My Work
Since joining ODU in 2002, I've seen my role as an artist extend far beyond the studio walls—it's about weaving community engagement into every facet of my work, from teaching to research to service. This approach infuses my art with a profound sense of purpose and meaning, allowing it to serve as a catalyst for positive change and connection within the communities I serve. Community Art, for me, transcends mere aesthetics—it's about nurturing a sense of belonging and pride among the people who inhabit each region. Through public murals and sculptures, I strive to evoke the inherent beauty of our surroundings while illuminating the rich tapestry of history and culture that defines our communities. These artworks aren't just adornments; they're living monuments that celebrate the spirit, history, and families of the towns they grace.
My journey in community-based murals spans diverse projects, each a testament to art's power to unite and inspire. From engaging youth in developmental workshops to collaborating with community organizations on service-based exhibitions, I've tirelessly amplified the voices and visions of those I serve. Notable commissions like the Magenta Line mural for the Elizabeth River Trail and vibrant pieces in Virginia Beach's Town Center and VIBE Arts District showcase how art can enrich public spaces with color and narrative. Beyond commissions, initiatives like the Saturday Morning Art Classes and collaborative projects such as the Synanthrope Mural Project demonstrate my commitment to bridging gaps and harnessing art's transformative power to cultivate empathy and understanding. Through mentorship, I empower the next generation to contribute meaningfully, believing that art has the capacity to shape a more vibrant, connected, and compassionate society—one community at a time.
